School Programs/Nature Center Field
Trips
The Chula Vista Nature Center's mission includes educating people
of all ages about the importance of coastal resources in Southern
California. We are proud of the partnerships and educational programs
we have cultivated which help to achieve this goal.
Sweetwater Union High School District
The Sweetwater Union High School District offers a seven-week Marine
Science class during the summer to high school students from throughout
the district. For information about this class, call the SUHSD Summer
School office at (619) 585-6260.
Chula Vista Elementary School District
The Chula Vista Elementary School District funds a full-time Science
Resource Teacher who works closely with the Nature Center staff
to provide environmental education programs which are integrated
in their science and social studies curricula. This teacher works
with over 5,000 CVESD students each year. If you are a CVESD teacher,
call (619) 476-7836 for information about scheduling a field
trip.
Other School Districts/Groups
Call (619) 409-5904 for
information about the following programs and field trips:
Other schools and youth groups may schedule field trips to the
Chula Vista Nature Center after the leader participates in a 2-hour
Field Trip Orientation Workshop (a teacher training program)
held at the Center to gain familiarity with the Nature Center
and the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. During these
field trips, Nature Center docents may be available to guide students
around the Center and grounds, where they learn about the importance
of watersheds, wetlands, and other coastal resources.

All groups need a reservation and are limited to
30 children at a time. Groups of 8 or less can be admitted without
taking the Field Trip Orientation Workshop, but they do need
to make a reservation for the day they plan to visit. Materials
to use during the visit will be provided by mail in advance of your
visit.
Sweetwater Safari
In partnership with U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Chevron, and
the San Diego Zoo, a backpack program called Sweetwater Safari
is offered to teachers who have already brought students to the
Nature Center. In this hands-on program, students take backpacks
containing binoculars, mini-microscopes, and other materials to
discover plankton, birds, plants and animal tracks on the trails
of the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. Call (619) 409-5904
for information about the next Sweetwater Safari training.
