Does the Nature Center accommodate strollers and wheelchairs?

Yes, the Nature Center and the shuttle to the Center both accommodate strollers and wheelchairs. Strollers will need to be folded down while riding the shuttle. The Nature Center is relatively flat and paved so strollers and wheelchairs can easily be used.

Can I drive in to the Nature Center instead of taking the shuttle?

No, the Nature Center is located on the Sweetwater Marsh National Wildlife Refuge. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service governs the Refuge. Because of the sensitive nature of the surrounding area, guests must ride the shuttle.

When does the shuttle run?

The Nature Center shuttle runs throughout the day from the parking lot to the Nature Center and back. The round trip takes approximately 15 minutes. If you have been waiting in the parking lot for more than 15 minutes, please call the Nature Center at (619) 409-5900.

Can I take the trolley to the Nature Center?

Yes, the Bayfront/E Street trolley station is located less than ½ mile from the Nature Center’s parking lot. The Nature Center’s shuttle will pick up guests from the trolley station parking lot when paged. Once you arrive at the trolley station, please call the Nature Center at (619) 409-5900 and ask for a pick up.

Can I rent the Nature Center for private events, meetings, or birthday parties?

Do I need to make a reservation for my group to visit the Nature Center?

Reservations are required for groups of 15 or more. Please call the Nature Center at (619) 409-5905 for details or to make a reservation.

Can I bring food to the Nature Center?

Yes, you may bring food and snacks to the Nature Center. The Gift Shop has sodas, water, and snacks available.

Are there people at the Nature Center who can answer questions about the wildlife or is all the information available on placards?

Yes! Our friendly staff is always ready to answer your questions or point out something interesting! Our trained docents lead regular tours during the week. We also have interpretive graphics in both English and Spanish to help you get the most out of your visit. Please visit Programs for tour and animal presentations days and times.

Can I touch any of the wildlife?

Yes! Don’t miss the Shark & Ray Experience where kids (of all ages) can meet local stingrays up-close! You may also encounter a tortoise, lizard or friendly snake out and about with a staff member or volunteer.


If the Nature Center is a nonprofit organization, why is there an admission price?

The admission fees represent just a fraction of the costs required to operate the Nature Center. The staff at the center is committed to providing high quality exhibits, programs, and care for the many local animals that make their home here. The admission costs are subsidized by the educational grants, donations and membership fees we rely on to operate the Nature Center. For more information please click here.
