This is a camp all about one of the Nature Center’s most-loved animals- stingrays! Through crafts, games and lots of up-close time with these graceful critters, we’ll discover all of the radical ways of rays!

Shark Bites

Sharks are some of the coolest animals around! In this camp, we’ll “swim” like sharks, feed sharks, and even (gulp!) touch a shark! Through games, crafts and up-close encounters, we’ll sink our teeth into all things shark!

Come meet some of the coolest rock stars on the planet- California’s own amazing sea stars! Discover sea stars and other shoreline celebrities up-close as we learn about life in a tide pool.

Tale of Tails

Through storytelling and movement, children will learn how animals use their tails to communicate and survive. We’ll even design our own tails to wear home!

Fish living in schools? Birds living in flocks? Some animals live in families just like you! We’ll explore the many types of animal families and visit with some very special animals along the way.

Fly in for some feathery fun! We’ll grab binoculars and search for bay divers, learn what it’s like to eat with a beak, make a nest and uncover the mysteries of flight.

Sniff like a shark, touch like an octopus and hear like a barn owl. As we use our 5 senses, we’ll examine the awesome ways animals use theirs.

Clownfish and lionfish! Flatfish and eels! Fish come in every color, shape and size you can imagine. We’ll dive into the colorful and scaly world of fish through games, crafts and up-close looks at some finny friends

Time to get grubby as we dig into our local soil! We'll plant seeds, press flowers and explore for worms in the compost pile, all while visiting with our local wildlife. Budding gardeners will dig this camp!

Sea Turtle Splash

Make a splash as you discover the amazing sea turtles that call the Center and the San Diego Bay home! Do they really live 100 years? Can they grow as big as you? Are they really green? From beak to tail, we’ll discover all things turtle!

Prey animals are built tough for survival! From speed to camouflage we will explore how the animal kingdom tries to NOT get eaten.

Come discover the slimy, gooey, dirty and sometimes smelly animals and plants that call the Discovery Center home! From slippery squid to hairy tarantulas and owl pellets to poo – this camp will leave your child saying, “EWWW that’s gross and AWESOME!”

Junior Apprentice

Session 1: June 25-27, 9:00am-4:00pm

The perfect camp for budding biologists! On Monday we’ll track wildlife and explore life under the microscope. Tuesday we’ll feed sharks and meet baby sea turtles up-close. Wednesday is for the birds as we see what it takes to care for eagles, owls and endangered clapper rails. Being a biologist has never been more fun! (Limit 16 Campers)

Commotion in the Ocean

Marsh Madness

Sweetwater Marsh is home-sweet-home to amazing plant and animal life, some of which are endangered! We’ll explore the bog, investigate the swamp and slosh around in the slough to discover the secrets of our local marsh wildlife. BYOB- Bring your own BOOTS!

The wild places of California are some of the coolest around! Each day we’ll explore a different habitat to discover the special wildlife that lives there. Whether we dive into ocean life, muck through the marsh or trek the dry uplands, we’ll discover amazing wildlife each step of the way!

Teens- 7th-12th Grade Graduates

Biologist Days
June 18-19, 9:00am-4:00pm

An unforgettable experience for teens who are interested in a career working with animals! Experience two days in the life of a keeper/aquarist first hand while working behind the scenes with staff biologists. Prepare animal diets, clean enclosures and more while discovering the inner workings of a wildlife facility! (Limit 4 campers)

3rd-5th Grade Graduates- G.A.T.E. (Gifted and Talented Education Program)

To confirm your child's spot in G.A.T.E. camps, proof of G.A.T.E. certification is required via email or fax to tilli@cvnc.us or 619-409-5910. Registrations made for children that are not G.A.T.E. certified are invalid, and will be charged a processing fee of $10.

The Apprentice- G.A.T.E.

What is it like to work with animals? What is being a field biologist all about? How do you feed an octopus, hold a snake, or clean a giant aquarium? This camp is a hands-on opportunity to see what jobs like these are really like. (Limit 10 campers)

Mystery in the Marsh- G.A.T.E.

Detectives needed! Can you help the Nature Center uncover the culprit of a “murder” in the marsh? It’ll take quick investigation, riddle-unraveling and forensic science to solve this Who-Dun-It! (You can count on the Center’s own helpful critters to provide critical clues along the way!).

SUMMER ART CAMPS


NEW! Devastation to Inspiration: Creative Action through Sculpture
Offered 2012 only
5th-12th Grade Graduates
June 4-8, 1:00-4:30pm

Oil spills in the ocean are devastating, but plastic pollution in the ocean is an oil spill of an even greater magnitude! And this type of “oil spill” comes from all of us, everywhere and every day. In this camp, campers will help artist Angela Hazeltine Pozzi, the creator of the Washed Ashore Exhibit, create a giant, free-standing oil spill plume out of black plastic and other marine debris collected from Pacific beaches. Campers will learn the whole process that goes into creating these amazing sculptures, and take part in sorting, preparing and attaching marine debris to create this new sculpture that will be on exhibit throughout the summer and then become part of the Washed Ashore National Tour! This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work with an acclaimed artist on this powerful exhibit. (Limit 15 campers)

NEW! gARTbage Art Camps
These camps are all about turning trash into treasure! Working with a local professional environmental artist, campers will help create big, three-dimensional murals for the public to view and smaller arts and crafts projects to take home and use! Through the Washed Ashore exhibit, campers will discover how this debris affects the animals that live in the ocean and learn how each of us can help stop the flow of trash into the ocean with simple solutions that begin at home. These art camps are sure to boost the imagination and instill conservation, creativity and respect in each participant! (Limit 15 Campers)

Register Early! Day camp programs are filled on a first paid, first served basis. Registration accepted online, by phone during our regular business hours (619) 409-5908 or in person at the Chula Vista Nature Center, daily 10 am- 5 pm. Full registration must be paid in order to reserve a space. Children who do not meet the age/grade requirements for programs will not be enrolled.

Program Cancelation Policy: No refunds will be given for cancellations less than 7 days prior to the program start date. For cancellations made more than 7 days prior to the first date of program, an 80% refund will be given. CVNC reserves the right to cancel any program. In the event that CVNC cancels a program, all program fees will be refunded. Programs are held rain or shine.
